AIMS: Evolutions of the AIMS Roadmap and JT-NM RoadmapsThe Join Taskforce on Networked Media (JT-NM) began in early 2013 with collections of user requirements around the evolution of television infrastructure into an IP/Virtualized future. In the seven years since then, an enormous amount of industry focus and collaboration has led to the development and deployment of SMPTE ST 2110, AMWA NMOS, and JT-NM TR-1001-1. This session reviews the historical drivers and evolution of the JT-NM and AIMS technology roadmaps, and looks forward through the lens of current technology trends to project the future for these roadmaps – including the evolution of virtualized, cloudified, and xAAS deployment methodologies and the standardization opportunities that accompany them.
AIMS: Introduction to AIMSIn this 30 minute session Mike Cronk, chairman of the board for AIMS, will provide background into the industry challenge AIMS is seeking to solve and the role AIMS plays in tackling that challenge in close collaboration with other key industry organizations. He will also provide a window into the current and future activities of AIMS as the organization seeks to foster the adoption of a common set of standards and open specifications for interoperability over IP for the media & entertainment and ProAV industries.
AIMS: IPMX - Debunking the MythsIPMX is an AV over IP standard for the ProAV market based on the SMPTE 2110 and NMOS set of open standards and specifications. This provides a solid, battle hardened foundation. IPMX then builds on top of this foundation to fulfill the requirements of ProAV customers. One common misconception is that SMPTE 2110 is over designed for most ProAV use cases, and as such will result in unnecessarily complex and expensive solutions. This presentation will highlight some of the unique characteristics of IPMX that enable cost effective and simpler solutions to be achieved.

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) joins SMPTE to ensure sound and audio are covered in SMPTE 2020. Organized by Iris Wu, Ambidio, these two essential sessions will cover topics and technologies on the tips of the tongues of every sound and audio engineer. After several months of dwelling in the COVID world, we hope to sit down with the experts to reflect on what is happening in the industry. We will examine what has changed, what is still in need of change, and how this will impact audio workflows in the future.

Audio Engineering Society: Seeking the Sound for Film: A Case of Mandarin-speaking Cinema

 


TU Duu-Chih is the mind and ear behind the sound of numerous Mandarian-speaking films. In a career spanning over four decades, Tu has worked with prominent directors such as Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, and Wang Kar-Wei. With a record of twelve Golden Horse Awards and a Cannes’ Technical Grand Prize on his belt, Tu received the National Award for Arts from Taiwan in 2004 for his significant contribution to the art and science of film in Taiwan. In this session, Tu will use some examples to share how he created the sound of these Mandarian classics. Let's check if there is really some cultural similarities and differences in crafting the sound and (of course) dealing with remote workflow.

IDEA Session 1 - Creating the Immersive Future: How we streamed a Light-field over a 10G NetworkIn this talk we describe how we streamed a light-field from the cable network edge to a holographic display that resolves multiple viewer perspectives simultaneously. The system is also capable of changing camera perspectives based on user gestures. This demo was shown in October 2020 at the Society of Cable Telecommunication Engineers (SCTE) Tech Expo, which is a pre-eminent venue for thought leadership in broadband network evolution. We shall review the video of the demo and delve into the challenges we had to overcome to build the end-to-end delivery architecture.
IDEA Session 2 - Future of Mobile (Untethered) Mixed RealityMixed Reality experience demands the highest performance graphics computation using dedicated GPUs to enable truly immersive experience for fast, smooth, and high fidelity visuals; concomitant with high precision spatial mapping for the fusion of the real and virtual worlds. Such performance is not possible to achieve on stand-alone un-tethered mobile devices such as AR/VR/MR headsets owing to the necessary power, thermal, and weight limitations.

GridRaster is a cloud platform for enterprise MR, that enables high-fidelity mixed reality (MR) solution on untethered/wireless devices using distributed-GPUs for all the graphics heavy computing and wirelessly streaming the solution to headsets, mobile phones, and tablets.
IDEA Session 3 - Understanding Immersive DisplaysNew display technologies capable of reproducing realistic 3D images are now under development. In the near future, it may even be possible to bring the fictional “Holodeck” to reality – creating a truly immersive, glasses-free visual experience. In this segment, you’ll learn about recent developments in these Immersive Displays, including multiplanar, volumetric, wavefront holography and light field. This range of technical approaches can be described through a taxonomy of optical design based on generating either points of light, rays of light or waves of light. These methods each have advantages and disadvantages, so will likely support different applications and use-cases.

RIST Session 1 - RIST Behind the Scenes: A Protocol Deep DiveThe Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) is an open specification from the Video Services Forum, created by a group of industry experts to provide low-latency audio/video transport over the public Internet, in a secure and reliable manner. RIST is available from all the major players in this industry and also as open source libraries. This session is a technical deep dive into the protocol, covering the basics of operation, packet recovery, security, authentication and other advanced features. It covers both RIST Simple Profile (VSF TR-06-1) and RIST Main Profile (VSF TR-06-2).
RIST Session 2 - Enhanced Usage of the RIST Protocol to Address Network ChallengesThe Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) is an open specification from the Video Services Forum. The specification allows vendors to innovate and implement a variety of functions and usage scenarios while staying within the boundaries of the specification. This session is a technical deep dive into how enhanced capabilities that are fully supported by RIST can be used to solve specific network challenges. The session will explore network conditions and deployments to provide reliable and secure links . RIST Session 3 - RIST Ground Control to Major CloudThis short talk will focus upon RIST for transporting your streams to and from a MegaVendor cloud such as Amazon or Azure. We expect you will want to process the stream in the cloud in some way, such as encoding it, then moving it out to somewhere else, such as to a CDN. In part one, we'll demonstrate compiling libRIST in Amazon EC2 using an Ubuntu image. In part two, we'll discuss two cost-saving strategies, one for Amazon and one for Azure. SMPTE Irresistible Jam - "Feeling Alright"Last June, the SMPTE Irresistible jam band was tasked with producing a music video for a joint SMPTE - IABM online meeting...but there was a catch: Everyone had to record their performances from home, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

No problem! 10 musicians located across the continent (Iowa, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ontario, and New York) warmed up their voices and tuned up their instruments to create this "coronavirus cloud collaboration" and answer the musical question..."How Ya Feeling?"
SMPTE Jam - "R.E.S.P.E.C.T."Once again, the SMPTE Irresistible Jam Band got together to record this music video of the 1967 Aretha Franklin classic, "Respect" (which was actually written by Otis Redding!).

14 talented SMPTE member musicians, recording remotely from locations across the United States and Canada, contributed parts for this song via the cloud. Over 400 audio and video files were created along the way to the finished audio mix and video edit.

We hope you enjoy this performance as much as we did putting it together. So, put on your dancing shoes, crank up the volume, and get happy!

SMPTE Posters: Subjective listening tests with expert listeners to determine transparency level of adaptive audio compression codecsIn the Spring of 2020, Ball State University worked with industry partner Netflix to train audio engineering students to be expert listeners and determine transparency levels for adaptive audio codecs. Tests were conducted by hearing scientists in the Ball State University state of the art audiology clinic. The students will give a presentation on technical aspects of the codec used, typical artifacts, and limitations.
Background on the training methods and data collection will be provided as well.
SMPTE Posters: Workflow Design for Disruptive Technology

Whether it was from film to tape, tape to files, analog to digital, there has always been disruption in the business of Content Creation. Because of this, it’s critical to create accurate and adaptable workflows on the first attempt. The methodology we'll discuss during this session is DIME (Define/Design, Implement/Improve, Measure/Maximize, Exploit/Explode).  DIME offers the ability to move quickly from first customer contact to successful deployment and monetization.


There are two distinct Workflow Processes currently used in the Media & Entertainment industry; one is for designing standards like ST 2067 and the other for processes for deployment in facilities. These are two separate and diverse methodologies employed for specific outcomes in two very important areas of M&E Workflow design. The objective of Workflow Design is to create Effective and Efficient processes while removing obstacles that impede Creativity and Productivity. Currently, facility workflow design happens after the purchase of technology. This is a practice that is unique to our industry and increases the level of difficulty while making it nearly impossible to create flexibility. Given this recommendation, it’s important we become familiar with how DIME performs and what to expect when using it in designing new and improving existing workflows.
