How do emerging audio technologies assist in sonic storytelling? When is sound in service to picture, and when does it stand as its own unique art? Are sound technologies becoming increasingly complex, or are we simply heading through a period of great change in the industry? This presentation will examine sound technology through a philosophical lens, applying core filmmaking concepts to emerging audio technologies. In this way, we will examine the dialectical opposition between sound technology and sonic art. We'll ask why sound technology has evolved how it has, and whether the industry is heading in the right direction.
