The first video image, transmitted in the 19th century, had no frame rate and very limited spatial resolution and dynamic range. Real television, born in the 20th century, involved trade-offs involving those three characteristics and more, such as sound, color, and stereoscopic depth. Some early solutions, such as line interlace to reduce frame rate while maintaining critical flicker-fusion frequency, have changed to problems needing new solutions.
