Description

This paper explores the performance of applying dither when quantizing High Dynamic Range (HDR) achromatic images to lower bit depths. We found that by applying “perceptual dither”, or dither in the ITU-R BT.2100 ICTCP color representation, it is possible to reduce the bit-depth necessary for visually accurate reproduction by 2bits. We conclude that by using perceptual dithering, it is possible to achieve the precision of a 10bit source signal with only 8bits, or the precision of a 12bit source signal with only 10bits.

Take-Aways from this Presentation
-Quantizing High Dynamic Range (HDR) images with 8bits may cause visible errors, depending on the color representation such as ITU-R BT.1886 or ITU-R BT.2100 (ICTCP). -Quantizing using the ICTCP color representation results in consistent errors with a lower peak across a wide range of luminance levels, but may still be above the visible threshold at 8bits. -Applying perceptual dithering, or dithering using the ICTCP color representation, can achieve a 2bit gain in visual performance, enabling the representation of HDR images with the visual quality of 10bits across 8bit interfaces.
