About us

To make digital TV work in the UK today and into the future, you need all the right people around the table. The Digital TV Group is uniquely positioned to make that happen. Our members come from all the key sectors of digital TV. And for over two decades they have collaborated with our technical experts to create the best experience for viewers across the UK. The DTG is the UK’s unique, self-funding centre for innovation in digital media technology. Since 1995, it has been central to the distribution of TV in the UK – digital TV, interactive TV, the digital TV switchover, on-demand TV, HDTV and UHD TV. The DTG underpins the free-to-air platforms Freeview, Freesat and YouView, and supports the development of pay-TV and other platforms. We’re now working towards the future of television – embracing the convergence of content and networks to efficiently deliver video to all screens, in all formats. Our members tell us that the thing they value most about the Digital TV Group is the unique opportunity it gives them to collaborate with their wider industry network. At our roundtables and working groups, members from all the key sectors in digital media technology work closely with our technical experts. We also host regular plugfests for testing and an annual summit that celebrates landmarks in progress and looks ahead at what’s next. The DTG isn’t just a centre of innovation for UK digital TV. DTG Testing is a vital resource for the TV and IP industries and a trusted partner to the regulators. The team works daily to maintain standards across digital TV platforms so retailers and broadcasters know they are working with certified manufacturers and devices they can trust. Each year our technical experts produce real-world test reports, white papers, best practice guidelines and the d-Book, the definitive list of specifications for UK digital TV. The Zoo at DTG Testing is the UK’s only comprehensive testing and accreditation centre for digital TV devices and services.

Ahead of TV: The Bigger Picture next week, we’re bringing you the ‘bigger picture’ on some of our brilliant speakers. Today is the turn of Marcos Milanez, Chief Content Officer at Rakuten TV. He tells us about his priorities, top trends and how he is one of the rarest of breeds… someone who hasn’t seen Game of Thrones! Tell us what your role entails: As Chief Content Officer, I am responsible for our content acquisitions strategy, the development of our Rakuten TV Originals and other departments (Marketing, Programming, Content & Marketing Country Managers) that liaise closely with Content.    What is your current priority? Make sure we secure content that is locally relevant and with outstanding quality to our FAST, AVOD and TVOD offerings.    What are the top three trends you are observing in media and entertainment currently? 👉 The shift of advertising budget to connected TVs due to a more detailed audience data & targeted ads.  👉 TV manufacturers becoming more and more involved with content and increasing their monetisation via “software” instead of hardware sales.  👉 More of the broadcast channels and strong relevant local IPs moving into FAST.    Which area of innovation in media and entertainment excites you the most and why? Streaming is an area that excites me due to its fast-paced transformation on both technology and content strategy/offering.    What might "watching tv" look like by 2030? Similar habits, different technology. Take FAST for example. It provides a linear Free TV experience, but just via a different method of delivery.    What is the last thing you watched?  Dune 2, amazing!   Who is the last person that inspired you and why? Elite Marathon Runner Anya Cullings. She started as an amateur runner back in 2020 during the pandemic, and she’s now a professional elite runner. It just proves that with dedication and strong mental health anything is possible.    What would people be surprised to learn about you? I did not watch Game of Thrones.    Why are you looking forward to the DTG Summit? To engage and listen to other peers on their thoughts around the industry trends. Time is running out to be in the room for TV: The Bigger Picture on May 8th. Check out out full programme, incredible speakers, and the reasons you need to act now here 👉 https://dtgsummit.com/ #Content #Streaming #FAST #DTGSummit

<<Content discovery in an “all you can eat” world of TV>> Going beyond the transaction, how can we revolutionise the customer experience to help consumers choose, not just give them choice? Next week we’re bringing you the bigger picture on #discoverability. In this exclusive session at the DTG Summit next Wednesday, our panellists will examine how current content platforms are personalising the way customers connect with the content they love and are offering more ways to discover new content, with ease. We will identify where there is room for improvement - including navigation, use of metadata, voice-controlled search, and predict what content discovery mechanisms we'll all be relying on come 2030. Join our fantastic panellists Oliver Davies, Julie Mitchelmore, Alexandra Wall and Jonathan Broughton as we leap forward into the next iteration of content discoverability. Do you want access to the bigger picture? In October 2023, the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, launched a Call for Evidence asking for input on how changing audience habits, in particular the increase in internet-based viewing, will affect the future of TV distribution. It is now preparing a report to Government which will examine the impact of recent market developments, how audiences watch content, and the longer-term impact that internet TV distribution will have on current services and platforms. At TV: The Bigger Picture next week we’ll hear from Ofcom Group Director, Strategy and Research Yih-Choung Teh who will actively explore “The future of TV in a digital age: Protecting and enhancing the #media ecosystem”   Delegates will hear: ·       The initial findings from the call for evidence ·       What universality means for a fragmented audience ·       What these shifts mean for digital inclusion Make sure you’re in the room on May 8th. Get your ticket now. https://lnkd.in/dVANU-M #Bigger Picture #DTGSummit #regulation #digitalage

Well today is the day! The requirements mandated by the Product Security and Telecoms Infrastructure Act need to be in place for ALL connected and connectable devices as of today, or companies risk enforcement measures including exclusion for the UK market and fines of £10m or 4% of global turnover (whichever is greater). Any company that isn't confident they are complying with the letter of the law, or isn't sure if their product is affected, can get in touch now and we can help. https://lnkd.in/eHBuKjeB It may sound obvious, but it's better to be safe than sorry! #cybersecurity #iot #connecteddevices

Here we turn the spotlight on them to find out more… https://lnkd.in/e42RbZGH Places are extremely limited for TV: The Bigger Picture on May 8th so book now to avoid disappointment. #BiggerPicture #DTGSummit #Accessibility
